Five stages of supply chain maturity have been identified. They are:

1. Functional Focus
2. Internal Integration
3. External Integration
4. Cross-Enterprise Collaboration
5. The Next Generation Supply Chain

Most companies are somewhere between stages 1 and 2. In a maturity matrix, the above stages are cross-referenced against the Planning, Sourcing, Making, Delivering and Returning supply chain phases. Many companies have multiple degrees across the phases.

Best in class organizations have their supply chain strategies at the product, not corporate level since product needs vary depending on their various characteristics including: life cycle status, forecast volatility, delivery requirements, etc.
